Nine Salt River High School students were selected to participate in the Native American Composers Apprentice Project and work with  nationally-recognized composer Raven Chacon (Diné).

NACAP is an intensive music composition immersion program in which Native American composers tutor Native students on the Navajo and Hopi reservations, as well as the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. The students learn the art of composition, resulting in the creation of new works that are performed  by professional ensembles.

Over the course of a few, short days, Chacon worked with students during their music class period and each wrote a short, 1-to-2-minute string quartet.

On Thursday, Aug. 31, the Catalyst Quartet arrived at SRHS to work with each student composer. The quartet played each student’s composition and students provided feedback on how they would like their piece to be performed. The string quartet will perform the compositions for the student body later that day.

The Catalyst Quartet is from New York City. They are the artist-in-residence for the Grand Canyon Music Festival.

NACAP is funded through a number of entities, including the Grand Canyon Music Festival, the Arizona Commission on the Arts and others.

The compositions will also be performed publicly at Scottsdale Community College August 31 at 5:30 p.m. in the Turquoise Room and at the Grand Canyon Music Festival Labor Day weekend.

Watch the video below to see the student composers at work and listen to an amazing piece composed by RayLeen Martinez (SRHS 10th grader) and performed by the Catalyst Quartet.
